Early loss of OC blow to County

Kildare County  0  Limerick 37   2

This was a game that County needed to win but it all started to go wrong as early as the thirteenth minute when centre half Dave O’Connell had to retire with a nasty wound following a clash of heads.

The first real goalmouth action came just after the half hour when from a Cathal Brady corner the ball dropped to Colin Osbourne, his shot was deflected into the path of Ger Robinson. The striker shot across the face of goal just out of the reach of Ciaran Kilduff arriving late at the back post.

Arguably County’s best chance came six minutes from the break when Colin Fortune rose highest to send in a thumping header from Cathal Brady’s corner. A world class from Dave Ryan denied the big midfielder.

Austin O’Neill then came to the Thoroughbreds rescue when he saved well after John Tierney got on the end of a perfectly weighted through ball from Chuckuma Manjor.

Limerick came close two minutes after the break when Tierney skipped past Fortune on the edge of the Kildare box but his effort was inches wide.

Tierney continued to cause the Kildare defence problems and minutes later he cut in from the left but his low shot found the side netting. Kildare continued to create chances of their own and Ryan was called on to save from Ger Robinson after Ciaran Kilduff knocked a Cathal Brady into the strikers path.

Limerick broke the deadlock after 65 minutes when good interplay between Brian Cleary and Gary Sheehan set up Cleary to cross from the right. Cleary picked out the unmarked Peter White on the penalty spot and he gave Austin O’Neill no chance with a well placed header.

O’Neill was again in action seven minutes from time when he denied Paul Walsh, who was sent through by Gary Sheehan. Two minutes later the game was over as a contest when the impressive Tierney tried to round Austin O’Neill. O’Neill was adjudged to have fouled the striker. O’Neill was dismissed by referee Grant, to be replaced by Colin Osbourne. Paul Walsh gave the stand-in keeper no chance when he stroked the penalty down the middle of goal.
