County firmly rooted to bottom spot

Kildare County 1 Wexford Youths 2

John Ryan already without Austin O’Neill – suspended following his dismissal last Sunday against Limerick 37 – was dealt another massive blow when Craig Mooney cried off due to “flu”.

In stepped Colin Cassidy for his first start of the season. Orrin Farrell was returned to the starting line up with John starting off with three up front Tevor Bowers, Ger Robinson and Ciaran Kilduff.

However Wexford Youths bounced back from the disappointment of last week’s League Cup final thrashing at the hands of Derry City to overcome Kildare County in a bottom of the table six pointer.

David Miller caused Kildare all sorts of problems on the right and his tricky run in the 13th minute ended with Danny Furlong tapping past Colin Cassidy. Wexford doubled their lead eight minutes later have Patsy Malone dived full length to head Anthony Russell’s cross into the net.

County side could have got a goal back in first-half injury time when Cathal Brady's deflected shot hit the outside of the post after some good link-up play involving himself and Trevor Bowers.

Although County improved after the break and had more of the possession, Wexford still looked the more dangerous going forward and Cassidy was called on to make a fine save to deny Furlong in the 78th minute.

Just a minute later substitute Eoin Kavanagh's spectacular 35-yard goal gave Kildare some hope and Wexford had to endure some nervy moments towards the end.

David O'Connell and Ciaran Kilduff both had headed chances in injury time but neither could get the necessary power to beat Pa Doyle in the Wexford goal.

Kildare offered little in the way of forward play in the second half although substitute Eoin Kavanagh’s spectacular 35 yard goal 11 minutes from time gave them some consolation.
