Hoop's comfortable win
Eircom League of Ireland Cup
Kildare County 0 Shamrock Rovers 3
In a game that never rose to any great heights Rovers proved too strong for a depleted County side at Station Road last (Monday) night in the Eircom League Cup. Apart from the lengthy injury list of Philly Gorman, Michael Roche, Colin Fortune, Austin O’Neill, Willie Tyrell and Stephen Cooling the Thoroughbreds had to do without the services of Ciaran Kilduff, who is on loan from Rovers and not eligible to play in accordance with the terms of the loan agreement.
Rovers were quick into action and Tadhg Purcell pounced after a mistake by Charlie Treacy but his shot ended up in the side netting. County came close to breaking the deadlock when a shot from John Broderick beat keeper Barry Murphy but was cleared off the line by former County star Darren Stapleton.
Rovers took the lead after 20 minutes when Eoin Doyle cleverly dummied a low cross by Tadgh Purcell and Stephen Rice was on hand to knock the ball home from twelve yards.
Rovers added a second in the 36th. minute when they won a corner, which was swung in by Alan Murphy. Eoin Doyle beat Treacy to the ball and headed to the Thoroughbreds net.
County manufactured two good chances around the hour mark. Cathal Brady knocked down a John Brophy free to John Broderick but the midfielder failed to make proper contact and the save was easy for Barry Murphy.
Another player joined the list of County walking wounded when in the 77th. minute Eoin Kavanagh had to retire and was removed to hospital with suspected concussion. (Fortunately the news on Eoin is good as he was discharged after observation).
Ger Robinson then showed great skill on the edge of the box but shot inches wide. Rovers finished strongly and added a third goal in the 86th. minute when young Robbie Creevey, who had been introduced as sub for John Martin, finished an Eoin Doyle cross at the back post.
