Waterford are next on the agenda

John Ryan will be looking to carry Kildare County’s good cup form into the league when he welcomes Thoroughbreds old boy Gareth Cronin and his Waterford Utd team to Station Road this Friday evening (Kick off: 7.45pm)

County have returned from the mid season break in good form. Last Thursday they almost caused something of surprise when they looked to have beaten Sporting Fingal though goals from Barry Slattery and Ciaran Kilduff until two late strikes by Robbie Doyle levelled the game.

That good form continued into Tuesday night when Ciaran Kildfuff’s hat trick was enough to brush aside the challenge of non league Fanad Utd in the third round of the FAI Ford Cup

Waterford Utd are sure to provide a sterner test of Kildare’s capabilities though. Just last week they beat one of title favourites for the league title this season when Luke Fitzpatrick scored the only goal against Dundalk and they now lie just three points behind league leaders Shelbourne.

Even though they were relegated from the Premier Division last season, Waterford still possess plenty of experience through their team and County will have to be wary of threat posed by the likes of Michael Foley, Vinny Sullivan and Dave Warren.

When the two teams met earlier in the season at the RSC, Kildare gave Waterford quite a fright with goals from Paul Donnelly and Cathal Brady twice giving Kildare the lead only for late goals from Kenny Browne and Sullivan to give Waterford a 3-2 win they scarcely deserved.

In team news County are hoping that Philly Gorman will be fit after missing the last two games against Sporting Fingal and Fanad United due to injury while Waterford will have to plan without the services of full back Stephen Quigley, who serves his second match ban for a red card against Fingal, and striker Willie John Kiely, suspended for reaching four penalty points, as well as long-term injury Paul McCarthy.

Gareth Cronin former County player said

"Station Road is a ground I know well. It's a small tight pitch but we will be going there full of confidence looking to take another three points."

Meanwhile Ciaran Kildufff has revealed the real reason behind his hat trick in the Third Round of the FAI Cup against Fanad Utd on Tuesday evening – a new pair of boots!!

Speaking after the game, the delighted youngster said, “I had only bought a new pair of boots, a pair of Nike Mercurial, before the game and Tuesday was the first match that I had worn them in so I think I’ll hang onto them for a while longer!”

In completing his treble, Kilduff became the first Kildare County player to score a hat trick since current assistant manager Barry O’Connor hit one against Monaghan way back in November 2003. He is also the first Kildare County player to ever score a hat trick in the FAI Cup.
