McGuill Under 21 Cup Final
All roads will be leading to Turners Cross this Sunday for what is probably the biggest game in the clubs history, when Thomas Donnellys Under 21 side face up to Cork City on their own patch in the final of the Enda McGuill FAI under 21 Cup.
The opposition top their group in the Dr Tony ONeill League. They have won all seven of their games and have conceded only three goals.
The vast majority of the Thoroughbreds squad are under age again next season but they have proven that they are a side to be reckoned with, currently topping the mid-west section of the Dr Tony ONeill League.
Their passage to the final has been far from easy. They beat Mullingar Ath 2-0 at home in round 1, with Eoin Kavanagh and Patrick Mahon scoring. Next up was Athlone Town, also at home and County came out tops on a 2-1 scoreline. Ian Brazil and Ger Robinson were the goalscorers.
Bray Wanderers were next up and County put in their best performance to date with at 2-1 at Edenderry Gibson and Mahon were on the mark again. The semi-final against Drogheda United at United Park was a cliffhanger and it was here that County showed their thru worth.
They led 1-0 deep in time added on but the home side scored in the 93rd minute bringing the tie to extra time. County defended bravely however ad the sides finished level at the end of extra time. When keeper John Flynn saved Droghedas fifth spot kick Barry Slattery stepped up to put Kildare in the final.
