Weekend fixtures
FAI Eircom League First Division.
Athlone Town are the visitors to Station Road on Saturday as the Thoroughbreds play their second last home game of the season. Kildare, who through the years have had a good record against the oldest club in the League. So far this season John Ryans side have won two and lost one of their encounters.
In April two cracking goals from Pauric Amond condemned Town to their first defeat in their new home at Lissywollen. That was followed by a 2-1 home win for County in June.
However the last meeting of the sides in Lissywollen in mid August turned out to be a disaster for Kildare when Stephen Cooling cracked home two brilliant goals early they then conceded four (including a hat trick from O’Dowd) in one of their worst performances of the season.
It would be tempting fate (after the Rep of Irelands 1-1 draw with Cyprus) to talk about revenge for that defeat but with County on somewhat of a decent run at the moment the manager will be happy with nothing less than a win.
Long term injuries still keep keeper Austin O’Neill and centreback Ian Malone out of contention and left back Darren Stapleton will be absent as he is serving a one match ban for accumulating four penalty points. Philly Gorman is still on International duty with the Irish Defence Forces in the CISM World Military Games in India.
Last week’s two goal hero Ger Robinson is available and will be eager to add to his five goals scored in four games for County this season.
