Cats on the prowl for points
Kilkenny City will be the visitors to Station Road for Kildare County’s penultimate game is this seasons league campaign on Saturday night. (The last game, as usual is away – this time to Dundalk on Saturday night week).
The visitors, who joined the league in 1985 and have a former Kildare County player Philip Hughes as their top scorer with 15 in the 2001/02 season, have struggled this term and currently prop up the table but John Ryan and his men will be taking nothing for granted and will be mindful of the fact that they made their exit from the Ford FAI Cup at the hands of the same opposition. The last time the sides met was at Buckley Park in September when they shared the spoils following a 1-1 draw.
All three meetings of the sides in the first division this season finished honours even. There were home and away 3-3 draws in June and April respectively and a 1-1 result at Buckley Park in their latest meeting in September. So the stats point to another close encounter.
The Cats face a Kildare side that (apart from the long term injury to keeper Austin O’Neill), will be almost at full strength. Cathal Brady is doubtful (groin strain) but will face a late fitness test. Philly Gorman and Philip Byrne sat out training during the week, with knocks picked up in Ballybofey last Friday, but both are expected to be fit.
Kilkenny City will be without the services of Pauric Fogarty, who will be serving a one match ban, having accumulated four penalty points. No doubt the team will be hoping to finish the season with a flourish, 2007 being the tenth anniversary of their one and only first division championship win.
The game kicks off at the usual time of 7.30 pm and children go free when accompanied by an adult. We would appreciate if all fans could make the effort to come along and show their appreciation for the efforts of the players during the season. The club has produced a special programme for the game, which includes a collage of action from the season and player stats for the year.
