Philly scoops top Thoroughbreds awards

Thoroughbreds goal-machine Philly Gorman scooped three of the top awards at a well-attended presentation function at Station Road on Friday night. Both the First Division and under 21 teams were well represented and many supporters along with the Club and Supporters Club directors and committee were there to show their appreciation for the efforts during the season.

Declan Forde, Chairman of the supporters club and Michael Casey for the directors in their addresses praised the work done by all concerned in maintaining a League of Ireland Club in the region and touched on the difficulties encountered in trying to take the club to the next level.

All were reminded that the club was completing only its sixth season at this level and patience was required from fans in terms of expecting success at the expense of financial prudence. Both thanked a long list of people who had worked tirelessly for the club since its foundation.

The main business of the function was however to honour the players who had worked hard through what was a luckless and difficult season.

Philly Gorman was named as player of the year by both the club and supporters and congratulated on being one of the top scorers in the division and for his selection for the Irish Defence Forces side that recently competed in the World Military Games in India. Manager John Ryan made the presentation on behalf of the club (pictured on right), while Tom Buckley did the honours for the S/C.

In addition to the above two awards Philly received the trophy for the goal of the season from club financial controller Regina Casey (2nd goal in 2-1 win over Athlone Town on June 23rd.)

Full back Darren Stapleton lifted the award for Club Person of the Year. Club Secretary Jimmy Dowling was on hand to make the presentation.

Darren, who has signed for Shamrock Rovers for next season was wished success with his new club. The special Service award went to popular club Physiotherapist Michael Neville and a presentation was also made (rather belatedly) to Alan Byrne who has passed the one hundred appearance mark for County (now 111). Steve McCrossan accepted the award on behalf of Alan, who was abroad, from club chairman Pat O’Hanlon.

Colin Osbourne was announced as the Under 21 Player of the Year and Barry Forde and Kieran Moloney were presented with the joint young player of the year award by club director Pat McNally.

The award for under 21 goal of the season was scooped by Falco Lorenzo (County’s second against Ballinasloe on October 21st.)

The supporters club under 21 player of the year was Ken Mahoney and Dan Prone was on hand to do the honours.

A very popular award each season is the S/C Achievement Award and this was presented to avid supporters Christo and David Heaney from Navan. Karl Scanlon made the presentation on behalf of the supporters club. The lads are also quiet handy with their DVD cameras and are responsible for producing the match highlights, which appear with the match reports on kildarecountyfc.com  each  week.

Christo and David have also produced a DVD encapsulating the 2007 season’s action, with some clever and appropriate soundtracks added and it was “premiered” at the function. This is a must for all County fans and would make a nice Christmas gift, particularly for Thoroughbreds fans, who are abroad. Contact the club or the Supporters club if you require copies.

Most retired to local hostelry SWIFTS - the Club’s main sponsors - to dance the night away, while in the immortal words of club scribe “Clogger” the older ones went home for their cocoa. Thanks to the staff of Newbridge Town FC for their excellent service as usual.
