John Ryan continues to build squad

The latest addition to John Ryan’s squad for the 2008 season is former Kilkenny City star Michael Comerford. The twenty-seven year old midfielder signed professional forms for County yesterday.

Michael played twenty-nine times for City last season and found the net four times.

He played in all four of the Cats league meetings with County last season- all of which finished in draws - and was somewhat of a thorn in the Thoroughbred’s side, scoring in the 3-3 away draw in April and again when the sides finished with an identical scoreline at Station Road in July.

He also played a big part in the Ford FAI Cup first round game in Newbridge in June when Kilkenny upset the odds by beating County by an unfortunate Alan McDermott own goal with eight minutes remaining.

A member of the defence forces Comerford was an integral part of the Irish DefenceForces team along with Kildare striker Philly Gorman in last year’s World Military games in India. He helped the side to reach the quarter-finals, scoring twice against Canada.

A former member of Kilkenny League sides Freebooters and Newpark he then joined Kilkenny City. The speedy midfielder stated following completing the signing formalities “I am looking forward to the fresh challenge at County and I intend to stake a claim for a place in the starting eleven. I can’t wait to link up with the rest of the squad for pre-season training”.
